Nobody expects the Chantry Inquisition! That is definitely going to be my catch phrase when referring to this game… BioWare surprised everyone today with a press release confirming Dragon Age 3 Inquisition. Not much has been said today, besides some confirmation and information on the Executive Producer behind the project, Mark Darrah. He addressed the fact that there are rumors surfacing and would like to just approach those currently and let us know that they aren’t ready for a full fledged announcement as of yet, but I’ll take just a quick confirmation any day.
So this guy Mark Darrah has been with BioWare for 15 years now and has done work on most of their greatest projects concerning fantasy type stuff. He started off as a programmer with the original Baldur’s Gate and moved onto Baldur’s Gate 2, Tales of the Sword Coast, Shadows of Amn, and Jade Empire as a lead programmer. He also managed to start off as a lead programmer on their handheld title, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, and he finished as the project lead. Finally he moved onto the position of Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise just after Dragon Age: Origins had released. So this guy has worked on a bunch of stuff of BioWare throughout the years and definitely knows what you want in their games. If you doubt his love for role playing well then perhaps you might want to know that he actively participates in a D&D Campaign and collects the pen & paper games. So this guy is going to provide a great story and gameplay for Dragon Age 3.
What Mark has confirmed so far is that it will be called Dragon Age 3: Inquisition and that the team has a lot of the same people from Dragon Age: Origins along with some young bloods. More importantly though is their implementation of a new engine built from the Frostbite 2 engine (as used by Battlefield 3 and crafted by DICE).
“We are working on a new engine which we believe will allow us to deliver a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customization. At PAX East, we talked about armor and followers… Yeah, that kind of customization. We’ve started with Frostbite 2 from DICE as a foundation to accomplish this.”
-Mark Durrah, Executive Producer BioWare
There is nothing on story yet or even a release window, but by my guess their probably going to aim for a Fall 2013 release or a Spring 2014. This game will definitely define the direction BioWare has gone and will be going, as with such a strong controversy over Mass Effect 3’s ending and those who were disappointed with Dragon Age 2. While I personally haven’t been incredibly disappointed by BioWare, I do believe they could have done so much more with the Mass Effect franchise (there is still chance for them to capitalize on it as well) and put more effort into Dragon Age 2. Now we just have to wait for some gameplay footage, or even a teaser would do great! I expect them to have a good presentation at E3 this year and hopefully some news before then too.
